Robert Ezra Park was born in Harveyville, Kansas in 1864 and worked as a sociologist, criminologist, ecologist, journalist, and writer. From 1905 to 1914, he was employed at the Tuskegee Institute with Booker T. Washington, and subsequently taught at the University of Chicago from 1914 to 1933. He contributed to the study of urban communities, race relations, and empirically grounded research methods, including participant observation in criminology. Park died in 1944.
