Robert Sargent Shriver Jr. was born in Westminster, Maryland, in 1915 and died in 2011. A diplomat, politician, lawyer, military officer, and jurist, he married Eunice Kennedy and became connected to the Kennedy family. He drove the creation of the Peace Corps and founded the Job Corps, Head Start, VISTA, and Upward Bound as part of the War on Poverty programs of the 1960s. The Democratic Party nominated him for vice president in the 1972 presidential election.
