Theodora Kroeber was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1897 and died in 1979. She worked as an anthropologist and writer, producing accounts of several Native Californian cultures. She grew up in Telluride, Colorado, and worked briefly as a nurse before pursuing higher education at the University of California, Berkeley, where she completed her undergraduate degree in psychology in 1919 and earned a master's degree in 1920.
