Biography

Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1822 and worked as a writer. She married Edgar Allan Poe, whom she was related to as a first cousin; she was 13 and he was 27 at the time of their marriage. In January 1842, she contracted tuberculosis, which progressed over five years until she died from the disease in 1847 at age 24, at the family cottage near New York City.
