William Eugene Smith was an American photojournalist born in Wichita, Kansas on December 30, 1918, and died on October 15, 1978. His photo essays included documentation of World War II, stories of an American country doctor and a nurse midwife, the clinic of Albert Schweitzer in French Equatorial Africa, the city of Pittsburgh, and pollution affecting residents of Minamata in Japan. His 1948 series "Country Doctor," published in Life magazine, is recognized as the first extended editorial photo story.
