William Wilson Morgan was born in Bethesda, Tennessee on January 3, 1906, and died on June 21, 1994. An astronomer and astrophysicist, he focused his work on stellar and galaxy classification and contributed to proving the existence of spiral arms in the galaxy. He served as professor and astronomy director at the University of Chicago's Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin and as managing editor of George Hale's Astrophysical Journal.
