Biography
Wilma Rudolph was an American sprinter born in Clarksville, Tennessee in 1940 who overcame polio during childhood. At the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, she competed in the 200-meter dash and won a bronze medal in the 4 × 100-meter relay. Four years later at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, she won three gold medals: in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 4 × 100-meter relay, making her the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field at a single Olympic Games. She died in 1994.
