History & Significance

A private battle between two great Anglo-Irish earls — the last private battle fought by peers in Ireland. The rivalry between Desmond (Geraldines) and Ormond (Butlers) exploded into open conflict. Queen Elizabeth I was furious at this breach of royal authority and summoned both earls to London. The event prefigured the Desmond Rebellions.
