The Battle

History & Significance

Agricola spent his fifth season consolidating the Forth-Clyde line that would later become the basis for the Antonine Wall. He proposed to the emperor that this line be accepted as the permanent frontier — it would have greatly shortened the front and saved troops — but Domitian preferred the prestige of pushing further north. The consolidation involved engagements against tribes who resisted fort construction.

Forces Involved

Three or four legionary vexillations with extensive auxiliary support; fleet operating on both coasts
