The Battle

History & Significance

Sigurd the Stout, Earl of Orkney, was killed at Clontarf fighting for the Norse-Irish alliance. His death ended Orkney's great period of southern expansion. Norse chronicles record many Orcadian warriors died at Clontarf — the battle had direct consequences for the Northern Isles' political development. The raven banner Sigurd carried into battle was said to bring death to its bearer.
