History & Significance

After the Otford reverse, Offa systematically re-established control over Kent. By the mid-780s he had reduced Kent to a dependency. He manipulated the Kentish church, created the archbishopric of Lichfield to rival Canterbury, and granted estates in Kent over the heads of Kentish kings. Kent ceased to be an independent kingdom.
