History & Significance

The 1539 Devon coastal muster brought the county militia to readiness along the full extent of the South Devon coast. Plymouth, Dartmouth, Torbay, and Exmouth all received watch parties. The muster began a sustained programme of coastal fortification in Devon that would culminate in the massive Elizabethan refortification of Plymouth in the 1590s.
