History & Significance

Malcolm I of Scotland raided into Northumbria in 949 — the Annals record he "plundered the English as far as the River Tees". This was part of the aggressive Scottish expansion southward that would culminate in the acquisition of Lothian at Carham in 1018. The Scots treated Northumbria as fair game during this period of English political instability.
