Aethelbald reached the peak of Mercian power in the 730s. Bede writing in 731 described him as holding dominion over all the provinces south of the Humber. West Saxon documents from this period show Aethelbald confirming grants in Wessex. This hegemony was enforced by repeated military demonstrations along the Mercian-West Saxon border.
