The Battle

History & Significance

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 850-51 Danish forces wintered for the first time on the Isle of Thanet. This shift from seasonal raiding to permanent basing was a structural change in the Viking threat. From Thanet the Danes could raid year-round and could receive reinforcements from Scandinavia. The following year (851) the same forces sacked Canterbury and London before being defeated at Aclea. The permanent occupation of Thanet marks the beginning of the settlement phase of Viking activity in England.
