History & Significance

Edinburgh Castle changed hands repeatedly during the Second War of Independence. In 1337, Edward III's forces retook the castle that had been recovered by the Scottish patriots under William Douglas in 1341. The recapture placed the castle back under English control and removed a major patriot strongpoint in the Lothians.
