The Battle

History & Significance

The engagement at Happrew near Peebles was part of Edward Is systematic 1304 campaign to eliminate remaining Scottish resistance before the great siege of Stirling. Simon Fraser — one of the heroes of Roslin the previous year — was caught by English cavalry. The engagement showed that the English had learned from the disasters of Stirling Bridge and Roslin: they could not allow Scottish cavalry to operate freely. Fraser escaped but the action further squeezed the remaining Scottish resistance.
