The Battle

History & Significance

Sigurd the Mighty Earl of Orkney slew Maelbrigte Tusk the Mormaer of Moray in single combat after agreeing to a truce. Sigurd strapped the severed head of Maelbrigte to his saddle and the protruding tooth of the dead Mormaer cut his leg as he rode; the wound festered and Sigurd died. The legend illustrates the treachery and brutal character of Norse-Pictish frontier conflicts in Moray.
