The Battle

History & Significance

The main Battle of Tettenhall (also called Wednesfield) destroyed the Northumbrian Danish army that had raided deep into Mercia. Following the initial engagement, Edward and Aethelflaed pursued the fleeing Danes through Staffordshire. The pursuit phase was as bloody as the battle itself, with three Northumbrian Danish kings (Halfdan, Eowils, and Ingwer) all killed. The victory ended any prospect of further major Northumbrian Danish raids into Mercia for a generation.

Casualties & Losses

Three Northumbrian Danish kings killed; numerous earls slain
