History & Significance

Before the final confrontation at the Winwaed, Oswiu attempted to buy off Penda with enormous treasure but Penda refused. Oswiu then resolved to fight and before the battle raided into Mercian territory to draw Penda south. The campaign leading to the Winwaed was a deliberate strategic manoeuvre by Oswiu rather than simply a defensive action.
