The Battle

History & Significance

The Kent Armada muster at Chatham and Dover in 1588 was one of the largest county mobilisations in the country. Kent was the front line of any Channel crossing, and its three Henrician Device Forts at Deal, Walmer, and Sandown were all reinforced. Dover Castle was put on war alert. The trained bands covered the stretch from the North Foreland to Dungeness in a continuous chain of coastal watches. This muster is recorded separately from the broader Kent and Sussex entry already in the database as it focuses on the specific fort reinforcements.
