A series of Viking raids penetrated the Thames Estuary between 836 and 840, striking at Sheppey, Mersea Island, and north Kent. The Chronicle records increasing Norse boldness with Danes wintering on offshore islands. The raids reflected fragmented Mercian authority following the Battle of Ellendun and prefigured the sustained campaigning of the 850s.
Norse raiders: c. 500-2,000 (5-20 ships). English coastal: c. 300-800.
