History & Significance

Contemporary sources suggest that the Brunanburh campaign involved naval as well as land operations. The Norse fleet from Dublin that transported Olaf's army was engaged or blockaded by English naval forces. Aethelstan had invested in coastal defence and maintained a fleet. The Brunanburh campaign was thus a combined arms operation by contemporary standards, with land and naval components coordinating.
