History & Significance

Following the capture of York, Athelstan convened a great council at Eamont Bridge near Penrith where the kings of Scotland, Strathclyde, and Wales submitted to his overlordship. Constantine II of Scotland, Owain of Strathclyde, and Hywel Dda did homage. The Northumbrian submission was sealed without battle but underpinned by the implicit threat of Athelstan s overwhelming force.
