History & Significance

The MacKenzies of Kintail systematically destroyed the MacLeod chiefs of Lewis throughout the 1590s, using legal processes backed by military force. By the early seventeenth century the MacLeods of Lewis had been replaced entirely by the MacKenzies. This engagement represents one military episode in what was partly a legal dispossession conducted with armed support.
