History & Significance

After the Catholic earls' victory at Glenlivet in 1594, James VI ordered their castles demolished and their supporters scattered. A series of skirmishes in 1595 as government forces occupied Banffshire and expelled Gordon allies. The Catholic earls went into temporary exile before submitting to the king.
