History & Significance

Beyond the siege of the castle itself, Royalist forces from the Newark garrison and the Midlands Royalist heartland repeatedly probed the Parliamentary-held town of Nottingham. Colonel John Hutchinson's garrison in the castle dominated the town, but Royalist cavalry regularly raided the surrounding countryside and occasionally attacked the town itself. The garrison lived in a state of constant readiness throughout 1643, surrounded by Royalist-controlled territory.
