History & Significance

Osbryht of Northumbria was deposed by a faction of Northumbrian nobles who placed the non-royal Ælle on the throne. This civil war divided Northumbria just as the Great Heathen Army was preparing to invade. The divided kingdom was fatally weakened when the Danes struck in 866, and the two rival kings only united too late.
