History & Significance

Æthelwulf and his son Alfred (then a child) made a pilgrimage to Rome in 855-856 but in 850 Æthelwulf faced Danish pressure in Berkshire and the Thames valley. The Danes had overwintered in England for the first time in 850-851, a qualitative change in the threat. Æthelwulf organised Berkshire defences as part of a broader military response.
