The Battle

History & Significance

After the Louth and Horncastle risings, the Lincolnshire rebel host converged on Lincoln and occupied Lincoln Cathedral, presenting their articles of grievance there. Royal commissioners including Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, faced a massed gathering of perhaps 10,000 men inside the cathedral close. The king's response letter demanding surrender was read here, splitting rebel leadership.
