History & Significance

Hugh Maguire of Fermanagh seized Enniskillen Castle, expelling the English garrison — one of the opening acts of the Nine Years War. Enniskillen's position on the Erne River made it strategically vital. The English sent a relief column that was annihilated at the Battle of the Ford of the Biscuits.
