The Battle

History & Significance

The Scottish raiding parties penetrated deep into Yorkshire — reaching areas that had not seen Viking raids since the ninth century. Ripon paid ransom; surrounding estates were burned. The terror was so complete that many northern English communities arranged annual payments to avoid further raids. This systematic extraction of tribute forced northern England to bear the cost of the unresolved war.
