The Battle

History & Significance

On the Scottish left at Flodden, Lord Home with the Borderers and the Earl of Huntly with Highlanders charged and routed the English right wing under Sir Edmund Howard. Home's cavalry swept the English flank and Howard sent frantic messages for help. However Home then failed to support the Scottish centre — whether through inability, exhaustion, or the famous taunt that he had done his part — leaving James IV's battle to fight unsupported. Home's success on the left became irrelevant to the outcome.
