The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records Viking raids on Lindsey (Roman Lincolnshire) in 841 as part of a pattern of escalating Danish attacks along the eastern coast. Lindsey, with its rich monasteries and productive farmland, was an attractive target. The raids preceded by a quarter century the conquest and settlement of the region by the Great Heathen Army. No organised Mercian military response is recorded — the Mercians were increasingly unable to defend the eastern coastline from Danish sea-borne raids.
Viking: sea-borne raiding force. English: no organised resistance recorded
