History & Significance

Deal Castle was seized by Royalists during the 1648 Kentish rising and held against Parliament alongside Walmer and Sandown. The Royalist garrison in the Henrican castles of the Kent coast used them as bases for naval liaison with the revolted fleet in the Downs. Parliamentary forces besieged Deal from June 1648; it held until August when the Scots invasion was defeated at Preston and the Second Civil War effectively ended. Deal Castle surrendered on terms.
