History & Significance

Regent Morton moved against the remaining Marian lords in Aberdeenshire and the northeast in 1573 following the fall of Edinburgh Castle. Government forces swept through the region, accepting submissions and punishing those who had continued to resist. The Gordon family — previously Marian sympathisers — submitted and were confirmed in their lands in exchange for loyalty. Morton's northeast campaign completed the pacification of the country after the civil war.
