History & Significance

Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy, known as Black Duncan of the Seven Castles, was one of the most aggressive Campbell expansionists of the sixteenth century. His campaign against the MacGregors in Glenorchy prefigured the formal proscription of Clan Gregor in 1603. MacGregor dispossession of ancestral lands drove the clan toward the outlawry that became their defining tragedy.
