The Battle

History & Significance

Culblean was the turning point of the Second War of Independence. After the disasters of Dupplin Moor and Halidon Hill, the young David II had been sent to France for safety. The new Guardian Andrew of Moray — son of Wallaces partner at Stirling Bridge — rebuilt Scottish military capacity and defeated the Disinherited at Culblean in Aberdeenshire. The Earl of Atholl was killed. The victory demonstrated that the Scottish cause was not dead and began a slow recovery that would eventually restore David II and full Scottish independence.
