The Battle

History & Significance

During the tense border situation of 1544, when England and Scotland were at war as part of the opening of the Rough Wooing, Scottish forces attacked Wark-on-Tyne and its castle. The attack was part of a broader pattern of Scottish defensive probing operations in response to Hertford's devastating raids into Scotland. Wark controlled an important North Tyne ford and its destruction would have opened the valley to deeper Scottish penetration. The castle garrison resisted successfully, preventing the Scottish attack from achieving its objectives.
