History & Significance

Rochdale was a major centre of the Plug Plot general strike with crowds marching from mill to mill pulling boiler plugs and demanding the Charter. The Rochdale actions spread into the surrounding Pennine valleys and were eventually suppressed by cavalry and infantry.
