History & Significance

Hexham in Northumberland saw a significant muster of Catholic recusants in support of the Northern Rising in November 1569. The Hexham area retained strong Catholic sympathies — the town's great abbey had been dissolved and the local gentry families included many recusant households. The muster contributed to the rebel force operating in the Middle March. Hexham was geographically important as it controlled the Tyne valley approach to Newcastle and served as a communication point between the rebel forces in County Durham and those in Northumberland.
