The Battle

History & Significance

Athelstan expelled the Norse-Irish king Guthfrith from York and received the submission of all British kings at Eamont Bridge. This was the moment when England first became a unified kingdom and Yorkshire first came under the direct rule of an English king since the Danish conquest of 866. Athelstan issued law codes in York and held court there. His achievement made him, in contemporary eyes, emperor of all Britain.
