History & Significance

After Philiphaugh, Montrose continued a reduced campaign in northern Scotland through 1646, operating from the Gordon country. He raised small forces, raided Covenanting supporters in Moray and Aberdeenshire, and attempted to sustain royalist resistance. However, with no prospect of relief from England following the king's surrender, his efforts were ultimately futile and he was eventually ordered to disband by Charles I.
