The Battle

History & Significance

While Charles Edward Stuart held court at Holyrood, the government garrison in Edinburgh Castle held out throughout. General Guest (aged 85) refused all summons to surrender. The castle's guns occasionally fired into the city. The situation — the Jacobites controlling the city but not its castle — symbolised the limits of their control. The castle never fell to the Jacobites.
