History & Significance

The simultaneous attack on Carlisle, linked to Bigod's revolt, showed how widespread the renewed rising was across the north. The failure at Carlisle after that at Hull confirmed the revolt was collapsing. Henry VIII moved swiftly to execute not only Bigod but also Robert Aske and over 200 other rebel leaders and commons as punishment.
