History & Significance

The final phase of the 893 Danish campaign. Haesten's army, having escaped the various English pincer movements, used the old Roman fort at Chester as a base. Aethelred applied systematic food denial — destroying all crops and cattle within reach. After two years of continuous campaigning since their landing, the Viking army simply disbanded. Alfred's system of burhs, reformed fyrd, and active pursuit had finally exhausted a major Danish force without a decisive battle.

Forces Involved

English: c. 2,000–2,500. Danes: c. 800–1,200.
