The Battle

History & Significance

The January 1537 muster at Beverley was the last significant rebel assembly in the East Riding. It showed that the December pardon had not extinguished rebel feeling. When Bigod failed to take Hull this second Beverley gathering quickly dissolved, but its existence was used by the Crown as evidence of continued rebellion justifying the annulment of the December pardon and the subsequent executions.

East Riding commons, c.1,000-2,000
