The Battle

History & Significance

The Danish army established a fortified camp on the River Lea north of London. Alfred constructed two fortifications either side of the river to block the Danish ships from reaching the sea. The Danes realised they were trapped and abandoned their ships, marching overland to Bridgnorth on the Severn. Alfred's engineering solution of blocking the river with forts rather than fighting the entrenched Danes shows his sophisticated strategic approach.

Forces Involved

Alfred: c. 2,000–3,000. Danish camp: c. 1,500–2,500.
