History & Significance

After the death of Sihtric of York in 927, Athelstan moved immediately to expel the Norse claimant Guthfrith from York and absorb Northumbria directly into the English kingdom for the first time. Guthfrith fled to Scotland but Constantine refused to hand him over. Athelstan received submissions at Eamont Bridge from Constantine, Owain of Strathclyde, and Hywel Dda. The expulsion of Guthfrith was achieved without major battle.
