The Battle

History & Significance

William Rufus conducted a second Welsh campaign in 1097 following continued Welsh resistance and Robert de Rhuddlan's death. This campaign also failed to achieve decisive results despite Rufus building new castles along the north Wales coast. The resistance of Gruffudd ap Cynan in Gwynedd proved insurmountable with contemporary military means, and Rufus eventually abandoned the attempt to subjugate north Wales directly.
